I was born in South Carolina. My father [a "Yankee"] always taught me [the "Little Rebel"] that that flag stood for rebellion against tyranny and oppression. Also, my father used to join the local black fishermen [in the late 1950s and early 1960s] on the Grand Strand and help them pull in their huge, heavy fishing nets while I awaited fresh seashell finds. Dad also sometimes enthusiastically attended the black churches in the area, joined in with the ecstatic holy roller black spiritualism and told me to always respect others no matter their race or socioeconomic status. The latter admonishment has protected me on numerous occasions.
